For what profit is it to a man,
if he gains the world, and loses his own soul?
He doesn't despite humans, per se. He once was, a young lad whose purpose was to live within societal means and construct. He didn't hate his life, he was just living — yet the concept of living feels like a feverish dream now that he lost the essence of life. His soul turned grey, his body turned cold, eyes shot red and the craving for something sweet only seemed to be satisfied with human blood. In his late night walks of peace and meditation, he was betrayed by his own insolence and was turned to now known by mankind as a vampire. The first of his kind.If someone would tell him 2nd century wasn't just about the invention of paper and literature, he would have laughed, but there he was, holding every thread he could to survive. In his first years living like a fugitive, he notices the change on his appearance and his strength. Despite his lanky figure, he could lift a whole cottage without breaking a sweat. He often finds it unbearable to be under the sun too long, yet he also noticed that after being burned a little by its rays, he regenerates. All of which would be heightened whenever he lets his body get what it craves; blood. He tried consuming human food like bread and cheese, some meat, fish, vegetables and mostly potatoes, which are found in the eastern region of where he was yet all have failed him to get his sense of taste back. During this time, however, as mankind progresses into consuming alcohol, he discovers that it also gives him a tiny tinge of humanity in its throat burning sensation as he drinks. (a couple of centuries later, he discovers his second favorite drink, black coffee.)In the first couple of centuries, he learns that he doesn't age. He looks exactly like how he did at the time he acquired his vampirism. He is perpetually 36, and as great as it sounds, it was harder for him to keep his appearance in certain places when all of them age and grow while he was in stagnant health and façade. He joined the first couple of wars to learn about the concurring monopoly in the world; he kept an eye on the monarchs, the economy, the vast consumption of monetary valued items and the society that is ever changing. He valued his knowledge and the time he roamed earth, the only thing missing is a possible companion. It took him a couple of tries, maybe more- the consumption of his blood is too much for some to bear, some die the moment his blood hits their mouth. He befriends a local bartender, he was dragged in his current life and every time they talk, he speaks about wanting to start anew and he asked him if he's willing to trust him."All for which, could possibly start you a new life you deserve."

A millennium is what it took to create an army. It took a couple of years after to establish hierarchy. Most of them immediately bowed once he shown himself, others questioned his latency. Through his piercing red eyes they learned that he's their God, the one who started it all.He became a conqueror, he took little cities in Europe, and slowly, he lost his humanity. His legion of vampires attest to his unruly nature powered by greed, long were the days he enjoyed his nightly walks, all he does in his spare time is to sit in his throne and drink blood, which was acquired for him."Only the sweetest for our Lord."His sin, despite the contrary belief that there's no one above him, was to love. They met sparingly, he thought of the world bleak, something of a nuisance. Centuries of being a ruler bore him, and he couldn't find anything else to put his mind into aside from his usual hobbies. Mathias didn't know if he should keep the charade of acting as one of them, not that it would bother him to show his truer nature that is mostly cold to the touch. She sees him in an aisle of books he already read, possibly met the writer, he noted how humans love romance and the theatrics they couldn't achieve in real life. He made a passing comment that made her laugh; it was unforgettable. The council opposed of his change. His demeanor softer after meeting a mortal, they share the same hobbies of intelligence; painting, reading, and mostly the nature of knowledge that they both want to explore — science. He was a known sorcerer, his nature is mostly obscured, only being mentioned in folktales for children whose parents remind them that there's someone watching in the dark and waiting to strike when the time is right. Many questioned his decision to live with her, some turned their backs on him, more left the qualms of his ruling yet he didn't care. All he knew was, in that moment, he felt human again.A couple of years was what it took for him to get accustomed to blending in. He burns easily under the sun so he was instructed to wear a thin yet long clothing. While she busied herself in smaller quarters of his castle, he travelled.

She told him to ease his head, not to worry about anything. Travelling would make him believe that humanity has a side that he hasn't seen, a genuine, passionate and helpful side that he never knew. Agreeing, he flee - Every week, he would take a couple of days to study different parts of the world; new invention would pop up, and he would tell her all about it. A new art technique? A possible change of surviving the plague, the anonymous regions in Asia, the conquers of natives, the different parts of the world she hasn't seen nor studied, he tells her.All of which falls on that sacred day of her death after being falsely accused of being a witch. To say he wasn't surprised was an understatement, he knew it would happen but he didn't think it would happen too soon — she was taken away too soon. She barely even got the chance to spend with their son, who got her golden locks and his piercing eyes. He just wished he was there, he knew exactly what to do to those who opposed him and yet, as fate allowed it, he let himself submerge in an day of wonder. He painted for her that day, he was walking home after a long weekend, the cries of his son made him hurry. You don't have to save me, save them from your wrath. The last thing he saw was her eyes, eyes full of wonder and love. Still, even after all the suffering she went through in the hands of those who Please, don't hurt them. They didn't know, they don't understand...

And there he was, all alone once again.A lot happened in past decade. He committed a grave sin, he let those who made her scream suffer as he choose to succumb into madness one day at a time. He's losing his loyal followers, deeming him to be too mad to rule and too dedicated to his human wife to see the essence and essential needs of his own created society. They saw his failure, and his leadership questioned. His ties with humanity severed, all of which he wanted to eradicate aside from his son who has his mother's smile. All through the years of war between men and supernatural beings, he was unscathed, he wasn't entirely hiding — but most certainly kept to himself. While his subordinates protect what was rightfully theirs through deception and manipulating mankind, he was there, he was just sitting on his throne, mulling the fact that there's no reason to live anymore — there is no her.He grew tired of all the unnecessary bantering, his army was warded off to the wastelands, others flee in desperation, some kept to themselves and believed it was the wrath of God who willed them to be unworthy to live despite being undead. He, on the other hand, stood ground and slowly fought for the only place he thought could save him from all the anger and madness, the castle he calls home.Once the forces of nature subsided into two recollecting groups, he told his council to lay low. There's no point in winning a war that was never supposed to happen, there was no use in fighting for an endless round of battle that only chooses whose side of history should be known. He wants to get out of this; his wife would want him to get out of this. In desperation and waning number of loyal followers, he told them to scatter — he told them to blend in, cater to the needs of what seems to be a bitter acknowledgement of their existence, it is how they will survive in the modern world.Mathias flee with his son, weary of what would happen next. He doesn't trust himself, he doesn't fully control his mind yet — the thoughts of his wife still hunts him whenever he closes his eyes. He decided to leave on his own, maybe find himself in the ruins of what could have happened, and brace himself to what should he do next."Where are you going, Father?"
"I promised your mother I'm going to save you, no matter what."
"Save me...from who?"
"Myself."

Chapter 3:
` of trust and betrayals

The report came back notorious, as expected. As the first living vampire of his species, he should have known what he did when he was immature would bite back when the time comes; and it did. The ancient blood that he possesses has been passed through negligence of his former subordinates. At first he wasn’t sure how to push through, the idea weighed in his head like a block, forming an immense pressure that he could only identify as a headache. This is giving him a headache. “There’s no use in forcing this to break when we haven’t exactly figured out their motive.” Mathias heaves, his eyes on the papers in front of him.“Satsuki should stay here until we figure out their next move. The generals are farther, it will take longer for them to gather. For now, we’re on our own.” He adds, turning to face his son with a nod.Eiser hands him a couple more gathered documents, Mathias runs through each one, scanning the pages silently. “When was this?” he asks, eyes gleaming with irritation.“A couple of days ago, some spotted them coming in and out of a warehouse in Suwon.” Eiser replies, hands behind his body. “Father-”“I’ll take care of it. This weekend should be yours, you’ve done enough.”“I can’t just let you take this, this is our case.”“Eiser, my son, what could possibly go wrong?”The night was warm, spring is almost coming to a half. Mathias notes the flowers blooming around every corner of Seoul. Lisa would have loved that, he notes, before he teleports to the warehouse in Suwon, as reported by Eiser. The dreadful feeling overcomes his senses, what is this?“King…welcome to our humble abode.” said a familiar voice, Mathias is in the middle of the abandoned warehouse, surrounded by not one but almost a hundred vampires waiting, surrounding the premises. He doesn’t face the familiar voice but rather notes of their presence; radiating with nothing more but the same power that runs through Mathias veins, albeit weaker, being faced with a hundred of them could do him no good.“Han.” Mathias finally speaks, his head turning to the side as he casually calculates his survival. It’s possible but the thread is too thin, he needs a backup.Eiser.Hey, son…“I was only aiming for your son, I didn’t think I would see… you.” Han spits, a roaring laughter escapes his lips. He believes he has the upper hand, who wouldn’t? A hundred vampires within the premises would immediately put an end to this, and would immediately put an end to him – to Mathias, if he were a regular bloodsucker.Being the king has its perks, he has capabilities no normal mortal would understand. He knows he could easily put down half of the common vampires around him, the bigger challenge would be putting himself against the pure blooded vampires surrounding him, two of which have ancient blood. One of them he created himself.“Do you remember our pledge?” Han cackles, he’s hunched by the stairs, eyes locking into the being in the middle of the floor.Mathias doesn’t utter a word, in fact, the silence was enough for the other to speak again as to answer his own question. “You asked us to be loyal, to only worship you.” He trails, bitterness and frustration lingers in his voice. “Yet here you are, betraying your own kind for mere… mortals. Is this what Lisa taught you?”It was a mistake, Mathias admits. Once he heard his wife’s name, all he saw was black and his fingers gripping around the other’s neck. The bitterness of the word encapsulates how he feels–empty. He strives to make do with his everyday life as how his wife would want him to, that was obvious, with the way he works as a doctor to save lives instead of taking them, and to take care of their only son, Eiser. One he neglected for so long.“You have no business here. What is this about?” Mathias finally speaks, about the matter at hand. His nails dug into the vampire’s skin, drawing a little bit of blood that had him hissing. “Why are you targeting dhampirs?”Han’s chuckle, despite being restrained, echoes within the vicinity. He doesn’t care if he dies, the plan was set to motion, they were there for a reason. “Too bad you had to come, we were only expecting your son.”Mathias' ability to sense hasn’t deteriorated through the years of being idle; he was a warrior in the times where he needed to adapt through the changes of the world. He knew how to hold himself high, keep the pace and to turn himself around within pending danger. A silver bullet. How…Han managed to escape him and immediately went into hiding. A couple of vampires step forward from the shadows, obviously trying to rile him up even more. Mathias isn’t new to fighting, this whole thing is just a ruse, what was this about? We were only expecting your son.His black coat is dirtied by blood, at least thirty unknown vampires were sprawled all over the floor with their necks turned and twisted, some were limbs, severed heads, and some were having a hard time breathing. Mathias steps onto one, the gasp was loud enough to trigger more vampires into the scene. I have no time for this.Ten, fifteen, twenty – thirty more unknown vampires, newly turned, attack him and all he could do is retaliate.Eiser…Hey, son.Their bond hadn't been great when Lisa passed, his grief was like no other, she was his better half and he tore himself into pieces when she left. It didn’t occur to him the pain he was causing his child, all he knew was he was mourning at the loss of his wife, forgetting the fact that his son was mourning at the loss of his mother.Mathias lays on the ground, a silver bullet pierced through his hip. Another one on his shoulder, and the last one near his heart. It wouldn’t have been a problem if only he was in a bigger space to cast hellfire and doomed all of them. However he thought of the nearby village, the town of Suwon was lovely enough to grow crops. Rice and wheat, he remembers, and he doesn’t want to take that away from them–these mere mortals. You’ve grown soft, King. Lisa would have been proud.“Eiser.” he weakly speaks, his head light but his stance firm. He will never cower to cowards.“I need your help, son.”
